Between Aug.17 and Aug. 21 the West African Football Union (WAFU) hosted both the Zone ‘A’ Women’s Champions League qualifier and the U15 Boys Championship in Monrovia, Liberia.

WAFU is a division of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). At the end of the two competitions, Senegal defended its U15 Zone ‘A’ Boys Championship title. Meanwhile, in the Women’s Champions League Zone ‘A’ qualifier, Liberia pulled a first-time win with Determine Girls Football Club beating out teams from Mali and Senegal.

Determine Girls executed an exciting victory on their home turf. The Liberian team tied 1-1 with AS Mande from Mali, on day one of the qualifiers.

On day two, AS Mande and Union Sportive des Parcelles Assainies (USPA) from Senegal drew 0-0.  These results allowed Determine Girls to prepare for a deciding match against the Senegalese team.

At the end of the final match, on day three, Determine girls beat USPA 1-0 at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium. This victory sealed the team’s entry into the 2022 Women’s League championship taking place in Morocco in October or November.

The CAF Women’s Champions League, sponsored by TotalEnergies, launched in 2021. The champions league showcases some of Africa’s best club teams. Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa are the reigning women’s club champs.

Last year, Liberia’s Determine Girls FC did not make it past the qualifiers, which makes this year’s victory even more special.
