It’s the fifth and final day of the 2022 African Senior Championships in Mauritius. Read below for results and team recap.
Day five results
Liberia’s Akeem Sirleaf competed in the men’s 200m final. Sirleaf’s last appearance at the African Championships happened in 2018. At that time, he did not advance past round one. Now in 2022, he secured his spot to compete in the 200m finals. A noted improvement for Sirleaf.
Sirleaf clocked a time of 21.21 placing sixth in the finals overall in the top eight African senior athletes that competed in the men’s 200m African championships race. First place went to Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who finished in 20.26.
Team Liberia at the African Championships
Liberia traveled to Mauritius with six athletes, two women and four men: Ebony Morrison, Nancy Tokpah, Telvin Jallah, Emmanuel Matadi, Akeem Sirleaf, and Wellington Zaza. The team members competed in the men’s and women’s 100m, the women’s 100mH, the men’s 110mH, and the men’s 200m.
Team Liberia advanced to the semi-finals in each event that they competed in. The nation placed sixth overall in the men’s 100m final thanks to Matadi’s 10.08 seconds race. After Zaza won the semifinals in the men’s 110mH, Liberia placed fourth overall in the finals. The men’s 200m finals ended with Liberia in sixth place.
The women’s 100mH finals was the highlight of the championships for Liberia. Ebony Morrison won the silver medal and became Liberia’s first female athlete to medal at the African Senior Championship. This performance also placed Liberia second overall in the African Championships women’s 100mH.
