Liberia has been selected to host the West African Football Union under 20 (WAFU U-20) youth tournament. The tournament began on April 24 and will run until May 6, 2018. FOX Sports Africa sponsors the event.
Liberia has selected the Junior Lone Star team to represent the country. Junior Lone Star has the best eighteen players taken from local football clubs in all divisions. With Christopher Wreh as the U-20 coach, selected players include Ashley William, Gbelly Beba Wilson, Daniel Paye, Allen Njie, Chauncy Freeman, Musa Noah Kebbeh, Edward Daddy Ledlum, David Teklo Tweh, John Chea Jaysay, Asiamuh Dann, Sheku Sheriff, Sidiki Blayday Kromah, Gasimu Sheikh Kouyateh, Lawson Saah Kongo, Jeremy Gift Saygbe, Sam N. Jackson, Urias Sayon and Sebastian Tackler.
This year’s WAFU U-20 features eight out of the nine Zone A youth teams. Zone A includes Cape Verde, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal and Sierra Leone. However, Cape Verde will not compete. Both Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex and Antoinette Tubman Stadium will host games, during the twelve day tournament.
WAFU U-20 is the first international competition held in Liberia since the Eight Nations Tournament in 1988. The tournament theme — “14” — honors international footballer and Republic of Liberia president, His Excellency George Manneh Weah. While President Weah played on the national team, he adorned the number 14 jersey.
